The Witcher novelist Andrezj Sapkowski mentions he has a “fantastic” arrangement with The Witcher 4 creator CD Projekt, yet the RPG developers no longer frequently seek his counsel.
During a book event for his latest novel, which GamesRadar+ attended, Sapkowski discussed his involvement with CD Projekt Red regarding any elements of development on The Witcher 4. He replied that he hadn’t played a role in the upcoming game – which may explain why he recently criticized an aspect of the RPG franchise he deemed “narratively incorrect.”
Sapkowski indicates that he previously maintained a somewhat closer collaborative relationship with CD Projekt Red. In earlier titles of the franchise, he recalls they would sometimes turn to him for guidance and further insights about his universe. Currently, though, he states that “it’s so infrequent” for CDPR to seek his input.
This change may stem from the studio’s grown assurance in a franchise it has developed multiple titles for over the years, or possibly from the reality that much of the content in those games is original to CDPR – considering the conclusion of his literary series, Sapkowski remarked it would be “impossible” to pen a sequel narrative, but the games are definitely set after the occurrences of the last novel.
Sapkowski hasn’t directly participated in The Witcher 4, but concepts from Crossroads of Ravens will be incorporated into the RPG – similar to how The Witcher 3 utilized Season of Storms.
