The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 Wireless has consistently held its position as the top gaming headset for consoles since our initial experience with it, but now there’s even greater cause to celebrate this remarkable set of cans as it finally boasts complete Nintendo Switch 2 support.

Initially, the 5 Wireless entered the elite group of top Nintendo Switch headsets that experienced compatibility challenges with Nintendo’s latest hardware right out of the packaging. At the beginning of June, I tested several SteelSeries headsets and discovered that aside from the SteelSeries Arctis Game Buds, devices utilizing a 2.4GHz wireless dongle simply didn’t function.

SteelSeries appears to have been tirelessly working behind the scenes, as a new GG 89.1.0 update has been released, introducing a firmware update that alleviates all my 5 Wireless frustrations.

While it may not be the most high-end sounding or feature-rich headset in the brand’s collection (that title belongs to the Arctis Nova Pro Wireless), its straightforward setup, impressive balanced sound from its Neodymium magnetic 40mm audio drivers, lightweight comfortable design, and extensive range of audio presets have made the Arctis Nova 5 Wireless one of my preferred pairs to use whether I’m gaming on my PC, PS5, and naturally, my original Nintendo Switch.

This is why I felt somewhat disheartened when it didn’t seamlessly integrate with the Switch 2 last month. Its Bluetooth connection was always reliable, but I detest the monotony that sometimes accompanies pairing, and consequently, its 2.4GHz dongle compatibility issues led me to reach for my Game Buds instead.

Thanks to this new update, the Arctis Nova 5 Wireless and the other Arctis Nova Wireless headsets perform exceptionally well, and I couldn’t be more pleased. The headphones no longer get caught in an on-and-off cycle since I updated to GG 89.1.0, and the delightful jazz-band melodies of the Mario Kart World OST can now fill my ears – just the way I adore.

SteelSeries has also graciously introduced a Mario Kart World audio preset among the hundreds of existing ones already available in the SteelSeries software and Arctis app. After testing it out, the new freeroaming mode sounds superior to ever before. This preset has become a staple of my headset for the Switch 2, particularly since it makes the roaring and constant engine noise far less irritating on my ears, allowing me to concentrate on that new soundtrack I cherish.

To upgrade your Arctis Nova 5 Wireless, simply open the SteelSeries GG software and go to Settings > About > Check for updates. After connecting your headset to your PC using its 2.4GHz dongle and a USB-A to USB-C cable, the firmware update will be ready for your new Switch 2.

Weekly updates, stories from the communities you cherish, and more

Since the moment I first grasped a NES controller, I’ve been captivated by gaming and the devices it operates on. I was able to connect a NES and SNES to a television, without directions, before I could even walk. Even today, nothing is more thrilling than unboxing a console or handheld for the first time and getting it set up. This fascination evolved into a passion for games and their music, which inspired me to pursue a degree in music and aspire to become the Scottish Nobuo Uematsu. After expressing my love for games through music, I transitioned to sharing it through writing on platforms like TechRadar and iMore. This progression led to my position as a Hardware staff writer for PCGamesN and later as the Senior Tech Writer for Dexerto, where I covered all aspects of Steam Deck, PlayStation, and Nintendo. With this expertise, I was promoted to Hardware Editor for GamesRadar+, where my obsession with Nintendo, PlayStation, and gaming tech remains as strong as ever.
