A sequel to The Social Network is currently in development, titled The Social Reckoning, yet Jesse Eisenberg will not reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg. The actor has opted out of participating in The Social Network 2, and he has now shared some insights into his decision, which apparently has nothing to do with the film’s quality.

Eisenberg is currently promoting Now You See Me 3, and during an appearance on Today, he was questioned about his choice to not be a part of The Social Reckoning. “Listen, for reasons that are unrelated to how fantastic that movie will be, really, to be honest,” he articulated. “When you portray a character, you reach a stage where you feel you’ve transformed into something different.”

Succession regular Jeremy Strong is taking over from Eisenberg, set to depict Zuckerberg this time. He will be joined by Mikey Madison, who portrays Frances Haugen, a previous employee of Facebook who became a whistleblower regarding internal matters within the platform, and Jeremy Allen White, playing Jeff Horwitz, a journalist covering her narrative.

The Social Reckoning continues years after the original, with Facebook as a giant in the realm of online discourse facing scrutiny from the Securities and Exchanges Commission. Sorkin is broadening his role this time by both writing the screenplay and assuming the director’s position from David Fincher, who helmed The Social Network but will not return, for reasons that remain unspecified.

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t hits theaters November 14. The Social Reckoning is set to release on October 9, 2026.
