In direct comparisons, PlayStation 5 titles generally showcase an advantage over their Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S equivalents. The Outer Worlds 2, on the other hand, turns that narrative on its head by exhibiting superior performance on Xbox instead of either PS5 or PS5 Pro, according to Digital Foundry.

On a superficial level, The Outer Worlds 2 on PS5 and Xbox Series X appear quite alike, but a detailed analysis uncovers that the former experiences image fragmentation, diminished resolution, frame rate declines, and screen tearing even in performance mode. Digital Foundry also pointed out minor lighting reductions in PS5.

Regarding the PS5 Pro, the report mentions that it employs Sony’s unique upscaling technology, PSSR, which is incompatible with The Outer Worlds 2’s lumen lighting or RT lighting effects. The report wraps up by stating that the PS5 Pro’s “frame rate fluctuations and more intense scenarios are prevalent, and the overall gameplay experience is markedly inferior to Series X in the finalized game.” It continues to theorize that The Outer Worlds 2 may have taken advantage of some proprietary hardware attributes in Xbox Series X|S that neither the PS5 nor PS5 Pro possess.

Obsidian Entertainment recently familiarized players with Outer Worlds 2’s six companion characters who cannot be romanced, before disclosing that they may turn against the player if motivated by a valid cause. The studio also revealed a Moon Man plush toy referred to as a “Couch-Panion,” which is awarded for winning a competition running until November 16. Players are not required to depend on a competition to procure a set of limited-edition, customizable Outer Worlds 2 Xbox Wireless Controllers, though. Nevertheless, both controllers cost more than the game’s $70 retail price.

GameSpot’s assessment awarded The Outer Worlds 2 an 8/10 rating and remarked that it “feels like the series [is] maturing, supported by adaptable combat choices and excellent role-playing development.”

According to the game’s release timings, early-access players will have the opportunity to play The Outer Worlds 2 on October 24. Others will need to wait until October 29 to experience it on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. This title will also be available as a day-one Game Pass Ultimate release.
