Gamers who have played The Last of Us Part II since its launch in 2020 have been eagerly awaiting the updates that have recently taken place in HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2. These dedicated fans are still ahead of those who are familiar with the narrative solely through the adaptation. Because of this, one of Season 2’s new cast members, Isabela Merced, has shared some insights for fans of the series.

This narrative contains spoilers up to The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3. Please stop reading if you haven’t caught up with the show.

“I believe that while watching this, you must embrace the emotions you feel in each moment,” stated Merced in an interview with Variety. “The writers and creators of the game did not intend for you to feel superior [to the characters]. They didn’t want you thinking, ‘Oh, everyone is flawed because they all have their own agendas.’ They truly want you to immerse yourself in your frustration and sorrow.”

This sorrow stems from the loss of Joel (Pedro Pascal), the beloved character who was killed by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) in revenge for her father’s murder at Joel’s hands. This has prompted Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to vow revenge against Abby and her allies for taking her surrogate father figure. Merced’s character, Dina—who appears deeply in love with Ellie—now finds herself in a precarious situation as she accompanies Ellie on a mission for revenge that risks both of their lives.

“The writers are on fire,” remarked Merced. “The story isn’t complete yet… There’s no need to surpass the message.”

Ramsey recently discussed the challenge of filming a poignant scene from episode 3 related to Joel’s death. While Joel may no longer be present, Pascal is still involved in Season 2. The upcoming episode will also introduce Jeffrey Wright’s character, Isaac, whom he also portrayed in The Last of Us Part II.

The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 4 is set to air on Sunday, May 4 at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
