The Boys universe continues to broaden with fresh narratives, yet only the most acclaimed endeavors will endure in the long term. The franchise’s originator Eric Kripke has disclosed this week that a second season for the animated spin-off The Boys Presents: Diabolical is improbable, although the creative team is “eager” to pursue it.
Launched in 2022, the series presents solo tales within The Boys universe through various animation techniques. With Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Simon Racioppa as its creators, the show garnered positive feedback from critics and viewers alike, achieving a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it appears that not enough audiences tuned in to view it on Prime Video.
“I don’t foresee a Season 2 for Diabolical,” Kripke mentioned to The Wrap. “It’s not due to our lack of effort. Ultimately, the viewer counts weren’t sufficient to warrant a second season, unfortunately. Although we cherish it and Simon [Racioppa], the showrunner, would be willing, we have not received the green light on that.”
Kripke had more optimistic updates about the upcoming The Boys: Mexico, a new series that will showcase a distinct narrative and character ensemble. Blue Beetle scribe Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is crafting the screenplay, with Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna as producers.
“Mexico is currently undergoing development. The pilot script is in the works. Gareth is a fantastic writer, and I find it to be exceedingly funny. I hope it materializes, but it’s still in the development stage,” Kripke remarked.
“The same situation applies to Vought Rising Season 1,” he added. “We have ambitions for a Season 2, if possible. They’ve [Prime Video] been exceptionally supportive, providing us with opportunities. But it’s a business, and we have to deliver results. So we hope the audience engages.”
This mirrors the circumstances surrounding Gen V, which is mere days from airing the final episode of season 2. A potential third season hinges on viewership. “Don’t wait a year to watch. Activate Prime and view it right now. If enough individuals tune in, then we will get a Season 3,” Kripke urged fans.
