Terror virtuoso Stephen King has posted a roll call of the films he cherishes most, deliberately leaving out the screen versions of… well, himself.

“My 10 top films (not counting MISERY, SHAWSHANK, GREEN MILE, STAND BY ME),” King noted on Twitter. “No ranking:

SORCERER
GODFATHER II
THE GETAWAY
GROUNDHOG DAY
CASABLANCA
TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE
JAWS
MEAN STREETS
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
DOUBLE INDEMNITY

It’s a powerhouse lineup, packed with undisputed masterpieces—Jaws, The Godfather Part II, and Casablanca instantly spring to mind. The single curious detail is that the newest entry, Groundhog Day, first lit up screens way back in 1993.

King frequently airs his cinematic takes online, recently dubbing regular partner-in-scares Mike Flanagan the “Tarantino of terror.”

Next up for the King cinematic universe: The Long Walk, drawn from his 1979 book. The cast features Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Ben Wang, and Mark Hamill.

Early notices are glowing; we awarded it five stars in our The Long Walk review: “The Long Walk earns its place among the finest King translations ever, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Bolstered by a remarkable ensemble and a script that enriches the novel, it’s another triumph for Francis Lawrence, who once again proves he’s a master of dystopian storytelling.”

The Long Walk arrives in cinemas on September 12. While you wait, browse our roundup of upcoming movies to plot your next theater trip.
