Square Enix Shuts Down Fantasy Game Mobile Model Over Persistent Bug Issues
Square Enix is discontinuing service for the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles remaster on iOS due to an irreparable bug that prevents players from accessing purchased downloadable content.
Originally introduced for the GameCube in 2003 in Japan and in 2004 in other regions, this action RPG marked the series’ return to Nintendo for the first time since Final Fantasy 6. Fast forward to August 2020, we received a remaster that included features like upgraded graphics and additional dungeons for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Android, and iOS.
We mention iOS briefly, however, as Square Enix is halting service. According to an announcement on their website, the Final Fantasy developer indicated that reports have been received since January 25, 2025, regarding iOS users being unable to access the content they have paid for. Upon investigating the matter, it was determined that the issue arises from a bug that Square Enix is unable to entirely resolve.
“The problem stems from changes made to the in-app purchase system,” the statement explains. “Further examination indicated that we cannot fully rectify the bug and incorporate the new updates, rendering it improbable to continue service for the game. Therefore, we are regrettably announcing that we will cease support for the iOS version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.”
Fortunately, for those who may be among the users who made in-app purchases in January 2024 or later, you have until August 31 of this year to submit a refund request.
