Rapper Soulja Boy is at it again, and by “it,” I refer to marketing gaming consoles that appear to be rebranded iterations of current gaming systems. Just like that, everything feels right in the universe.
If this is all unfamiliar and perplexing to you, Soulja Boy began retailing white label Chinese retro emulators under his SouljaGame label back in 2018. We graciously referred to them as “questionably legal” at that time, and it appears the following years haven’t significantly motivated the ‘Crank That’ rapper to satisfy his detractors, despite once confronting legal threats from Nintendo and subsequently removing his SouljaGame consoles from storefronts.
If you’re closely inspecting the images above searching for distinctions, you can likely cease your efforts. They appear to be almost identical, and the specifications provided are the same. Both handheld devices feature 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED displays, SD865 processors, and 8GB of RAM. The sole variation, initially, was the cost. Soulja Boy’s device originally priced over $400, but he has now lowered it to a relatively modest sum of $200, which is approximately what the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 retails for.
The rapper has been surprisingly tenacious in pursuing his drop-shipped retro gaming console project, yet the future of the SouljaGame Flip is uncertain at best. Reviews of other SouljaGame consoles are nearly universally unfavorable, and even more troubling, Retroid has released a statement to RetroDodo condemning what it termed a rebranded Pocket Flip 2.
“I was unaware of this,” the representative stated. “This is not any official licensing agreement. He lacks authorization to rebrand our products and market them as his own. The Retroid Pocket Flip 2 is patented in the U.S. by us.”
Old habits are hard to break, I guess.
It may be wise to stick with the best retro gaming consoles we suggest in 2025.
