Sony Surpasses 75 Million PS5 Consoles Sold with Thriving Monthly User Engagement
Sales of Sony’s PS5 console have now reached 75 million units, which is slightly below the PS4 sales during the same timeframe.
By the end of the previous quarter, PS5 sales had surpassed 65 million. Now, in the most recent quarter (ending 31st December 2024), Sony has sold an additional 9.5 million consoles, marking the highest sales quarter for the console.
Overall sales of games and consoles have risen by 16 percent year-over-year, with revenue in the same category increasing by 37 percent.
Sony credits these increases to a rise in available units, a boost in third-party games (and downloadable content), as well as an upsurge in sales from online services.
The number of monthly active users on PlayStation Network reached 129 million in the last quarter – a record high, showing a 43 percent increase from December 2017.
Moreover, 42 percent of PS5 buyers in the last quarter were new PlayStation Network users, indicating a growth in the overall user base.
PS Plus revenue also saw a 20 percent increase year-over-year, which the company attributed to users upgrading to higher tiers. Sales of digital games have also risen: 74 percent of game sales this year are digital, compared to 66 percent last year.
Sony additionally released the PS5 Pro in this last quarter, and while console sales aren’t detailed in this report, it likely contributed to the increase in hardware sales.
Astro Bot was a strong release for Sony in this last quarter – it reported 1.5 million sales in its first month. Helldivers 2 has also been a successful title for Sony in 2024, in comparison to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in 2023 during the same period as the company’s standout release.
