A fresh Roblox licensing initiative might lead to Like a Dragon spin-offs being crafted within the online realm, provided it adheres to the canon.

I engaged with Roblox shortly after it launched in 2006, and what I perceived as enjoyable, though simplistic at that time, has somehow evolved into a global phenomenon. This is partly due to the extensive creative community that has crafted full-fledged games of their own on the platform. This naturally expanded into collaborations, with Sega launching an official Sonic the Hedgehog Roblox game a few years ago.

However, it appears Sega is not finished with the platform, as Game File reports that under a new “License Manager” tool, entities can request submissions for user-created games that incorporate their characters, with Netflix, Lionsgate, and Sega participating. However, instead of pursuing the obvious choice of Sonic fan games for Roblox’s predominantly youthful audience, Sega is intrigued by Roblox users developing games featuring the mature-rated Like a Dragon series. The company will evaluate submissions of Like a Dragon-themed Roblox games that garner an average of 1,000 daily players.

Yet, there’s a stipulation, as Sega insists these games must remain true to the narrative. In the report, Sega articulates, “To ensure consistency and alignment with the official canon, all fan-created content based on the Like a Dragon IP should primarily reference the storyline, characters, and environments as depicted in the official Like a Dragon main game series.” It adds, “While we promote creative expression, please ensure your works remain faithful to the world and lore as portrayed in these canonical entries.” Naturally, this does not imply that Roblox-produced games will be regarded as canon, even if Sega adopts them.

RGG Studio already produces numerous Like a Dragon games, with four entries launching between February 2023 and February 2025 – three of them within a single year, so I can’t envision myself turning to Roblox for my fix of the series.

I was disappointed it wasn’t Judgment 3 initially, but RGG has officially convinced me on its gritty, time-traveling, jazzy action game now officially named Stranger Than Heaven.
