Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo have verified that they are, in fact, the masterminds behind the extended post-credits sequence of Thunderbolts*, as noted in a social media message encouraging fans to remain seated until the film’s conclusion for an initial glimpse of Doomsday.

“If you haven’t viewed Thunderbolts… Hurry! @jakeschreier crafted an incredible film!” states their post. “Kudos to the entire cast and team. And do ensure you stay until the final credits… we’ve left a little surprise for you.”

Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier previously revealed that, although he was present during filming, the post-credits scene was actually directed by another individual on the location of a different film. It’s now confirmed that, as Schreier suggested, that film was Avengers: Doomsday, and the directors were indeed the Russos.

I’m about to delve into some Thunderbolts* spoilers, so turn back now if you want to remain completely unaware.

In the post-credits sequence, occurring approximately a year subsequent to the film’s events, the Thunderbolts – now officially rebranded as the New Avengers – bemoan their competition with Sam Wilson/Captain America’s own rendition of the Avengers, which is at odds with their government-sanctioned team.

However, their discussion is interrupted by an alert that prompts them to call up a satellite image of the Fantastic Four’s vessel entering the atmosphere, presumably from their own alternate reality where The Fantastic Four: First Steps will unfold.

This sets the stage for Doomsday’s extensive cast, which, while not entirely disclosed, already features the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and even numerous Fox X-Men.
