The animated sci-fi adventure series Rick and Morty often and notably experiments with its own format. Certain episodes stand alone, some are connected to a broader storyline, and others are primarily the former with aspects of the latter. As per showrunner Scott Marder, this blend arises in part from an inability to overlook amazing ideas.

For Marder, a “full season” is one that encompasses both episodic narratives and serialized arcs. “I believe there’s always a focus on incorporating all of it within a season,” he states. However, that doesn’t imply that everything consistently unfolds as anticipated.

“There’s simply no way around the fact that we might begin a day aiming to address something,” Marder explains, “and then someone proposes an idea that is so compelling, it energizes Dan [Harmon] and me in such a way that we don’t even need to discuss that we’re shifting our focus to this for now, as it brings us so much delight.”
