Numerous captivating decisions were made regarding Captain America: Brave New World, but one notable concept that didn’t make it involved a gamma-radiated President armed with an oversized weapon facing off against the new star-spangled champion. In a recent discussion with JoBlo, director Julius Onah disclosed that during the initial phases of bringing Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) inaugural solo adventure to the cinema, he would confront a crimson-hued Thunderbolt Ross (Harrison Ford), who was apparently less brutal than the character we ultimately saw, and notably more shrewd.
“At one point in time, it didn’t make the final cut, there was a concept where Red Hulk, harking back to the comics, brandished a gun, but it just didn’t align with the movie’s tone,” Onah elaborated. This idea was certainly in line with Red Hulk’s comic book legacy, depicting him as a much more cerebral force than the version showcased. Remaining true to Ross’ mental background, but with significantly greater strength, Red Hulk is identified as a tactical military leader who can utilize advanced weaponry, including a custom-made firearm developed by SHIELD capable of launching rounds that can breach Hulk’s defenses.
Sadly, that slightly more astute iteration of the massive crimson entity did not appear in the film, which ultimately benefits Sam. The newly appointed Captain America already had a formidable task ahead, contending with an excessively potent chief executive, and arming him would have escalated the absurdity of the situation. Nonetheless, considering Bruce Banner’s management over the Hulk, it may not be entirely out of the realm of possibility in future installments.
Harrison Ford has already shown his enthusiasm for rejoining the MCU, and considering that Brave New World concluded with him incarcerated, there’s every reason to believe it could unfold. Could there be an opportunity for him among select groups in this universe, given his comic journey into the Thunderbolts (serendipitous with the team’s name) or even the Avengers, where he had a brief affiliation? If so, if the former President behaves well, Red Hulk might arm himself and spring into action. In the meantime, why not explore all forthcoming Marvel series and films that are coming your way
