Rockstar’s 2018 expansive Western adventure Red Dead Redemption 2 has attained remarkable success with over 79 million units sold, positioning it among the top five highest-selling games of all time. The game is anticipated to continue impacting the gaming landscape with speculated ports for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Although the ports haven’t been officially confirmed, there are some developments, and in this article, we aim to compile all we’ve heard regarding the rumored ports.
What do we know?
Earlier this year, trusted informant Nate the Hate mentioned that a port of Red Dead Redemption 2 is headed to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, along with an update that enhances the game on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has already been accessible on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S via backward compatibility. This was also applicable for GTA 5, which was playable on the newest consoles before Rockstar released upgraded versions of GTA 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022 with significant improvements.
Then in October 2025, Nate the Hate confirmed the ports are still in development, but had no details to provide about potential release dates.
No information is available on what the anticipated PS5 and Xbox Series X|S enhancements could entail, although upgraded graphics and performance are two possibilities.
The original Red Dead Redemption, conversely, made its way to Switch in 2023 after first launching in 2010.
What has Rockstar/Take-Two articulated?
Formally, Rockstar and Take-Two have not commented on upcoming ports of Red Dead Redemption 2. Nevertheless, the company’s recent earnings report featured a slide stating Take-Two is working on eight new adaptations of previously released titles set to launch by the conclusion of its 2028 fiscal year, meaning by March 31, 2028.
This encompasses remasters and ports, with only four confirmed so far: these include Civilization 7 for Meta Quest VR (set for release on April 10, 2025), Civilization 7 for Switch 2 (arriving June 5, 2025), WWE 2K25 for Switch 2 (launching July 22, 2025), and Borderlands 4 for Switch 2 (release date TBA).
It’s conceivable that ports of Red Dead Redemption 2 could be among those adaptations yet to be announced. The speculated GTA 4 remaster might also fit this category. The earlier announced Max Payne remakes could also be included here.

When will the RDR 2 ports become available?
If the rumors hold true, Red Dead Redemption 2 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 could debut before the conclusion of 2025.
Preorder the RDR 2 ports
Since Red Dead Redemption 2 ports for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 have not been officially declared, there are no updates regarding preorder options.
RDR 2 ports trailer
No trailers are currently available for the potential Red Dead Redemption 2 ports, and there haven’t been any trailer leaks that surfaced publicly online.
Rockstar’s upcoming release
Rockstar’s next major launch is GTA 6, which has recently been postponed from May 2026 to November 2026. It remains unclear whether Rockstar will develop the potential new editions of RDR 2 or if the company will engage an external studio for the task.
Take-Two’s perspective on ports
Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two is a strong proponent of ports, and CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that the company invests time and effort to ensure they do “the utmost quality in making the title distinct for the new release.”
“We enhance the technology, elevate the visuals, and implement performance improvements. That’s why I believe our remastered titles usually perform remarkably well,” he expressed. “We don’t merely port titles.”
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which featured updated versions of three GTA titles from developer Grove Street, was launched in 2021 and faced numerous technical challenges. Despite this, the game reportedly achieved considerable success, selling an estimated 10 million copies.
