Could stick drift be a relic of the past?

Announcement: Nintendo

The Joy-Con drift issue has been a significant discussion point throughout the Switch’s lifespan and if you are concerned about it resurfacing in the next generation, there might actually be some positive news on the horizon.

The technicians at iFixit recently conducted a teardown of Nintendo’s alarm clock ‘Alarmo,’ revealing it utilizes the “more robust” Hall effect sensors. The teardown uncovers a “magnet and Hall effect sensor” situated within the rotary dial button at the top of the device.

As explained by The Verge, this could potentially and genuinely enhance the clock’s reliability in the long term:

“That technology, which is already employed in numerous third-party controllers, should not only improve precision while using the dial to navigate the alarm clock’s menus, but it will also ensure that in five years’ time, Alarmo’s dial continues to function as reliably as it does now.”

Considering the confirmation of Hall effect sensors in this new Nintendo product, it has sparked speculation about the Switch’s successor possibly adopting the same technology in its next-generation controller (likely making stick drift a thing of the past).

While there isn’t much information available regarding the new Joy-Con controllers yet, Nintendo has reported they utilize a magnetic connection to the main system. They also seem to include mouse-like capabilities, featuring an optical sensor.

This latest discovery comes after a free Super Mario Bros. theme update for Nintendo Alarmo on Mario Day earlier this week.
