A timeless Studio Ghibli film will be reprinted this summer. Shout Factory is set to launch a Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-ray of Grave of the Fireflies on July 8. In contrast to many Ghibli features, the 1989 movie directed by Isao Takahata is not necessarily appropriate for younger audiences. Rated PG-13 for violence and bloodshed, this somber narrative unfolds during the final days of World War II in Japan. Grave of the Fireflies Limited Edition Steelbook is available for preorder at an attractive discount at Walmart and Amazon. Alternatively, you can preorder the standard edition Blu-ray for just $18.

Grave of the Fireflies Limited Edition Steelbook
comes with 1080p Blu-ray and DVD editions of the film. Concerning the extras, there’s an in-depth exploration of its storyboards, numerous deleted sequences that were created only as storyboards, image collections, a gathering of trailers, an interview with director Isao Takahata, and a conversation with the late film reviewer Roger Ebert.
Amazon was initially charging the full $27 MSRP, but the price has now decreased to align with Walmart‘s $22 offer. If you place an order now from either store, you will automatically receive an updates on any additional discounts available until your preorder is dispatched.
While films created by Studio Ghibli typically revolve around fantasy and encompass environmental themes, Grave of the Fireflies stands out as one of the rare exceptions, drawing inspiration from the personal narratives of World War II survivor Akiyuka Nosaka. Grave of the Fireflies revolves around 14-year-old Seita and his four-year-old sister Setsuko, war orphans endeavoring to survive amidst food shortages, abusive relatives, and bombardments by the Allied forces in rural Japan.
The film does not hold back in addressing its topic, yet it remains a timeless animated masterpiece with a profound message at its heart and fleeting instances of joy within this somber tale. Just be ready for an emotional journey with this movie.
The case design for Grave of the Fireflies resembles that of last year’s The Boy and the Heron Steelbook release more than the prior editions in the Studio Ghibli Steelbook series. Grave of the Fireflies was previously released on Blu-ray in 2012 and has obtained a steelbook release showcasing a singular old-fashioned background color aesthetic. However, earlier Blu-ray editions have been out of print for years.
