Poll: GameStop Offers A Tempting Switch 2 Trade-In Deal, But Is It Really Worth It?
Purchasing a new console around its release date (or, in some instances, at any point during its life cycle) can be quite expensive.
In many cases, it can be wise to sell your current console and apply that discount towards your next purchase, particularly if the upcoming model offers backward compatibility. Regarding the Switch 2, GameStop has confirmed they are presenting a fairly attractive trade-in offer in the US if you exchange your old Switch for the new model.
If you trade in your Switch OLED, you could receive up to $175 off the Switch 2. For standard Switch consoles, the trade-in value is $125, and for Switch Lites, you’re looking at $100.
Not too shabby, to be honest! However, as highlighted by Gizmodo, these amounts will likely be applicable only if your Switch is in its original packaging and in excellent condition. Any scratches or issues with stick drift can significantly lower its worth (or lead to outright refusal).
This raises the question: Is it genuinely a good idea?
Even we, who attempt to maintain our Switches in pristine condition, may not qualify for the highest trade-in amount. After extended use, the rubber on our analog sticks has worn down, and the Joy-Con rail system isn’t as robust as it once was. Even without visible damage, they probably wouldn’t attain that sought-after ‘A grade’ trade-in value.
A previous survey revealed that a striking 65% of the community expressed their intention to retain their console.
This was likely due to a wish to pass it down to others, keep it for games like Ring Fit Adventure, or simply to preserve memories. Ultimately, the idea of trading in your Switch wasn’t appealing for many. There’s even an extra reason to hold onto it now that we know it will support GameShare with selected games.
But here’s the reality… we now have the price of the Switch 2, and it’s not inexpensive. Just for the console, you’re facing a cost of £395.99 / $449.99 / €469.99, and when considering games and accessories, it all adds up to a considerable sum. Trading in your original Switch may be your best route to join the Switch 2 generation.
Given what we know about the pricing and GameStop’s pre-order offer, we thought it was worthwhile to inquire again: Will you trade your current Switch for the Switch 2?
