Following the triumph of 2024’s Fallout TV series and this year’s trending Minecraft film, there is no denying that adaptations of popular video games can be successful – and Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer indicates that more projects may be on the horizon.

In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer discussed the future potential as season 2 of Fallout is in development and the A Minecraft film has recently premiered. “What I would convey to our fans is that we’re learning and evolving throughout this process, which instills greater confidence in our ability to pursue additional projects,” admits the lead. “And we enjoy it, and our community seems to draw a lot of enthusiasm from it.”

Spencer elaborates, explaining how the company is capable of “gaining insights” from every new adaptation. “Every time we partner with a creative collaborator who has a unique perspective on narrating the story, we learn something valuable,” he states. “Going all the way back to ‘Halo’ [the TV series adaptation at Paramount+], we gained insights from creating ‘Halo,’ and we continue to learn from ‘Fallout.’

The head continues, acknowledging that while some adaptations might “miss the mark,” it’s simply part of the process. “All these experiences build upon one another, and obviously, we’ll have a few that don’t succeed, it’s just part of the journey,” Spencer explains – but these so-called failures won’t deter Xbox from engaging in future initiatives: “To our community who appreciate this work, I assure you, there is more to come, as we are growing more confident and learning throughout this process.”

However, it’s difficult to specify what “more” entails at this moment. “That’s why I find it challenging to hint at any specific projects, because although I am aware of the work in the creative pipeline, I want to allow them time and avoid placing undue pressure on the teams,” Spencer remarks. “I really appreciate the narratives our teams are currently developing, and the games they are releasing. There is tremendous interest from traditional media, and we are excited about that.”

The potential for additional adaptations does not imply that Spencer wishes them to become “more like licensing,” since “the video game industry stands strong on its own,” emphasizing the importance of creativity. “We mustn’t allow this to transform into a necessity where every franchise requires a game or film or TV show, becoming more akin to licensing. It must remain focused on the creative opportunities that linear media presents for our franchises.”
