An almost flawless copy of the original 1939 Superman #1 has been sold via Heritage Auctions for $9.12 million USD, officially establishing it as the most precious and costliest comic in history. Coupled with the extreme scarcity of any comic from 1939, the Superman #1’s nearly impossibly immaculate condition, rated at 9.0 out of 10 by comic grading expert the CGC (Certified Guaranty Company), propelled its value to exceptional heights.

The edition itself was discovered in a box of newspapers while clearing out an attic in northern California, with its nearly miraculous condition maintained by its placement among other papers and an ideal set of environmental conditions.

There’s no denying that Superman stands as one of the most renowned and impactful characters of all time, initiating the American superhero genre with the groundbreaking Action Comics #1 in 1938. Shortly thereafter, the adventures of the Man of Steel expanded beyond the pages of Action Comics with Superman #1.

“What a monumental day,” Heritage Auctions vice president Lon Allen states in a declaration. “I’m delighted for our consignor. Superman No. 1 represents a landmark in pop culture history, and this copy is not only in unparalleled condition but also has a story worthy of a film. I was pleased to see the price reflect that and feel honored that Heritage was entrusted with this iconic book.”

The prior record-holding comic was an 8.5 graded copy of Superman’s inaugural appearance, Action Comics #1, which was sold for $6 million via Heritage Auctions in 2024—indicating a 50% increase in the record-setting price.
