A subtle element in The Last of Us season 2, episode 3 is leaving viewers teary-eyed – and it may hint at an even more heartbreaking scene.
The following contains spoilers for The Last of Us season 2 so far as well as the game, so proceed with caution if you’re not current!
In the most recent episode, Ellie visits Joel’s grave following his tragic death in episode 2. She leaves some coffee beans for him, creating a poignant moment that is heartbreaking for fans. “The coffee beans elicited an audible response from me, goodness,” remarks one viewer. “I hadn’t shed a tear until that moment,” adds another.
“At least we can be certain they won’t overlook the final porch conversation,” observes this fan – in the game, a moving flashback shows that Ellie and Joel’s last conversation took place on the small porch briefly seen in episode 1, where Joel talks about needing to trade for coffee (hence the coffee beans).
In the series, Ellie fibbed to Gail, stating she didn’t talk to Joel that evening.
“We knew the porch scene would eventually happen since Ellie’s guitar appears back in her room the next morning. But the coffee beans solidify that,” comments another.
Although Joel’s demise is incredibly sorrowful, Pedro Pascal had an unexpectedly light-hearted reaction to it. “I believe this is the best one,” Pascal jested. “No, it’s up for competition with Game of Thrones. It has to be. I adore the golf club. I think I’ll take up golf.”
