Nintendo Switch 2 Patent Hints at Upside-Down Gaming Possibilities
A recent patent filed by Nintendo indicates that the Joy-Con controllers for the Switch 2 might be inserted into either side of the primary console, allowing you to turn it 180 degrees based on your preference.
As reported by VGC, the patent features comprehensive images illustrating the concept, with both Joy-Con controllers effectively utilizing the innovative magnetic connection layout to enable attachment on either side of the console. Unlike the original Switch, this was not possible unless you wanted the Joy-Con facing backward, which… well, isn’t exactly practical.
With the Switch 2, being able to invert the console will allow you to choose whether the single headphone jack is oriented up or down. Naturally, other elements that you typically find on the top of the device, such as the power button, volume controls, and cartridge slot, would also relocate to the bottom.
What’s particularly intriguing, however, is that while the USB port located at the bottom of the device will likely be the standard for docking your Switch in TV mode, the new USB port at the top is positioned slightly to the right when viewed head-on. Therefore, if you do choose to turn the Switch 2 upside down, it seems likely that you will not be able to dock it in that orientation (though of course, you could just dock it normally and either detach the Joy-Con or use a Pro Controller).
As of this moment, it remains unclear what the function of the new USB port at the top is. It could have been a sleek design had it been centered like the bottom one, but it appears we will need to wait until Nintendo provides clarification in the coming months. Could we expect some quirky peripherals..?
Needless to say, as with any patent, this feature may not actually be present in the final version of the Switch 2. It does seem likely that you will be able to flip it, however, given the new design.
