Nintendo Expands Its Mobile Gaming Portfolio with New App Releases

The Switch 2 is undoubtedly the major topic of interest for Nintendo looking ahead, but another area of focus it intends to persist with is mobile applications.

During the company’s Q&A for its latest financial results, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was questioned about the company’s “current status” regarding desirable devices and the “plans for them moving forward.” Unsurprisingly, it is “continuing to develop new game applications” for mobile, as it remains a “vital” connection for consumers.

Shuntaro Furukawa: “While we cannot disclose specifics about upcoming application releases, we are dedicated to developing new game applications… As we move towards Nintendo Switch 2, it is crucial to enhance our touchpoints beyond gaming. We believe that smart devices will play a significant role in this effort, and we will persist in conducting research and deploying initiatives.”

Furukawa also mentioned how mobile applications have helped Nintendo access certain areas of the world it has not been able to penetrate with its ‘dedicated video game platform business.’ Additionally, it has assisted individuals globally in connecting with beloved Nintendo “IP and characters.”

“Nintendo has launched mobile applications in numerous regions worldwide, including areas we have not reached with our dedicated video game platform business. By the end of September 2024, the total downloads of Nintendo apps surpassed 900 million (Total number of unique users for apps released so far by Nintendo). I believe this has broadened the opportunities for more individuals to engage with Nintendo IP and characters.”
