Pioneering the Leaderboard

There’s been extensive dialogue concerning Nintendo designating Mario Kart World as its principal launch title for the Switch 2 over several other prominent franchises.
Nate Bihldorff from Nintendo of America offered an official statement on this to Inverse last month, stating it’s “one of the most widely accessible games imaginable,” featuring a considerable skill level alongside a straightforward entry point suitable for all ages.
It’s not surprising that the continuous success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the original Switch indicates there is “a substantial demand for racing games” (or at the very least, Mario Kart titles):
“Mario Kart 8 not only showcases that there is a significant interest in racing games on the whole, since it has performed exceptionally well throughout the entire Switch generation, but it really circles back to the notion that this [Mario Kart] is an experience that can truly please any type of Nintendo enthusiast. Even someone who isn’t yet a Nintendo fan might become one later. For these reasons, it aligns perfectly with the [Switch 2] system.”
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe stands as the best-selling title on the Switch, having sold over 68 million copies as of March 2025.
Previously, Nintendo’s Bill Trinen discussed the launch window titles for the Switch 2, indicating that Nintendo aimed for players to perceive Mario Kart World and the new Donkey Kong game as “somewhat genre-defining and franchise-defining” experiences “that really leverage the uniqueness” of the hardware.
This came after Nintendo faced criticism online for announcing that Mario Kart World would retail at $80 on the Switch 2.
Do you believe Mario Kart World is an appropriate choice for the Switch 2 launch? Will you be trying it upon release? Share your thoughts in the comments.
