Revealed in November 2020, Project 007 narrates an origin tale for James Bond. While we haven’t observed any gameplay footage yet, we have still gathered a considerable amount of information regarding the anticipated game. When will Project 007 be launched?
There is no information yet regarding the release date for Project 007. It was announced in November 2020, and many perceived the announcement as a strategic move to entice individuals to join IO on the IP. Revealing games early in development to attract talent is a common tactic in the gaming industry.
A significant new addition for Project 007 is Rodrigo Santoro, a former Ubisoft expert who joined IO in 2024 to take on the role of missions director for the James Bond game. Santoro expressed his enthusiasm about joining IO to work on the James Bond game, noting that most companies focus on sequels, thus he’s eager for a fresh challenge.

Project 007 platforms
The only confirmed platform for Project 007 at this time is the Nintendo Switch 2. However, it is expected that the game will also be available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. IO has stated that the game is being crafted for “modern systems and platforms.”

What is affirmed is that Project 007 presents an origin narrative for James Bond—the very first instance of a James Bond storyline in any entertainment medium—and it shall be a “completely novel Bond narrative.” Players will “acquire their 00 status” throughout the game’s storyline.
Nevertheless, that’s all that has been disclosed so far regarding the narrative. James Bond films are recognized for their globetrotting escapades, as Bond pursues villains across the globe. The series is also famous for its action, and it is anticipated that Project 007 will feature some of this. Bond occasionally requires stealth, and IO’s familiarity with the Hitman series would seemingly assist in this aspect.
IO aims for the game to initiate a new trilogy. CEO Hakan Abrak informed IGN that Project 007 will not be based on any of the existing Bond films. Instead, the developer is granted the opportunity to craft its own rendition of James Bond for the game.
“What’s thrilling about this project is that we are actually allowed to create an original story,” Abrak expressed. “So it’s not a gamification of a movie. It’s entirely beginning and evolving into a narrative, hopefully leading to a significant trilogy in the future. And just as importantly and exciting, it’s a new Bond. It’s a Bond we have constructed from the foundation for gamers. It’s incredibly thrilling to merge all the tradition and the rich history that exists in collaborating with the family to create a young Bond for gamers; a Bond that the gamers can claim as their own and evolve with.”
Project 007 game engine
Project 007 is being crafted utilizing IO’s proprietary Glacier engine. The company is recruiting a multiplayer programmer, and a previously observed job listing requested someone with multiplayer experience to collaborate on Project 007. This indicates, but does not verify, that the new James Bond game may feature multiplayer.
Who’s developing Project 007?
Project 007 is in “active development” at IO’s facilities in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmo, Sweden.
“Designing an original Bond game is an immense endeavor, and I genuinely believe that IO Interactive, in close collaboration with our creative partners at EON and MGM, can produce something extraordinarily special for our players and communities,” Abrak stated. “Our enthusiastic team is eager to unleash their creativity into the legendary James Bond universe and create the most ambitious game in the history of our studio.”
Former MGM executive Robert Marick remarked, “We aim to offer a fresh perspective on this iconic franchise to gamers and Bond enthusiasts globally. IO Interactive are experts in crafting vibrant, immersive worlds filled with compelling narratives.” Marick departed MGM after the announcement of the game.
A James Bond shakeup
A significant unanswered inquiry about Project 007 is whether any aspects of the project changed due to James Bond custodians Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson being bought out of their ownership, with Amazon MGM Studios assuming control over all creative decisions.
Broccoli and Wilson had overseen the James Bond franchise for nearly 60 years, after it was handed down from their father, Cubby Broccoli. The duo has been the driving force behind the entire Bond franchise during that timeframe, including selecting the actors for the iconic spy’s role. Their influence has transcended just films, as Broccoli, at least, has been involved in game-related decision-making; it recently emerged that Broccoli raised several concerns regarding the GoldenEye game for Wii.
The effect of the new leadership at Amazon MGM Studios on IO’s game remains uncertain, but GameSpot has reached out to the studio in an effort to acquire further information. We’ve also contacted Amazon MGM Studios.
History of James Bond games
Numerous companies have developed James Bond video games over the decades. One of the most memorable and iconic James Bond games was Rare’s 1997 GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64. Electronic Arts produced James Bond games as well, including Agent Under Fire, Nightfire, and Rogue Agent. Activision took charge for a while, releasing titles like Quantum of Solace and Blood Stone. No new James Bond game for consoles has emerged since 2012’s 007 Legends, although Cypher 007 was launched for mobile devices in 2023.
The next James Bond movie
The 26th Bond film is currently in development, with David Heyman of Harry Potter fame and Amy Pascal from Spider-Man onboard as producers. Amazon MGM Studios will be responsible for producing the film, yet there are no updates regarding any key particulars, including the most pressing question: who will portray James Bond? Aaron Taylor-Johnson was thought to be the leading candidate at one point. It remains unknown who may direct the new Bond movie or when it might be released.
A Wall Street Journal report from December 2024 indicated that Broccoli and Wilson were in negotiations with Amazon executives concerning the series’ future, leading to significant developments on the project being postponed. Now that Broccoli and Wilson are no longer involved, some speculate that Amazon may expedite the production of Bond 26.
