Netflix Restructures Team at Oxenfree Developer Evening College Studio

Streaming powerhouse Netflix has dismissed staff at Oxenfree developer Evening College Studio.

According to Game Developer, a number of unidentified employees were informed that their roles and responsibilities were no longer necessary last month, which came as a surprise to the indie gaming studio.

Netflix chose not to provide a statement regarding the report.

Best known for its Oxenfree games, Evening College Studio was acquired by Netflix in 2021 as part of the streaming titan’s strategy to expand into interactive entertainment.

The studio’s debut game, Oxenfree, received critical acclaim upon its original release in 2016. The side-scrolling narrative adventure showcased a group of teenagers embroiled in eerie sci-fi events and earned praise for its writing and atmosphere.

The studio’s 2019 sequel, Afterparty, which centered on characters attempting to outsmart the Devil in a lively game, did not achieve the same level of acclaim. In 2023, Evening College Studio revisited the Oxenfree universe with a direct sequel – Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, which was well-received.

It is still unclear what Evening College Studio will pursue next, although today’s report indicates that the recent layoffs will not disrupt the company’s project lineup.
