A Star Trek series cherished by numerous fans may soon become untraceable in the cosmos, as reports indicate the family-oriented animated program, Star Trek: Prodigy, is set to be removed from Netflix. This animated series, which originally premiered on Paramount, faced cancellation after a single season, before it was captured by the powerful red N. Now, it’s been disclosed that the series may be at risk of disappearing again, not due to a decrease in viewership, but rather because of expiring licensing agreements.
In a collaborative message from the creators, Dan and Kevin Hageman, on X, the leaders of Star Trek: Prodigy stated, “Although the potential departure of #StarTrekProdigy from Netflix is unsettling, it has little to do with a decline in viewers or any illicit activities. We’ve learned that the license for S1 expires on June 24, and S2 on December 31. We remain hopeful that someone will acquire it. The upcoming generation of Trek enthusiasts deserves this.”
While the future removal of #StarTrekProdigy on Netflix is disconcerting, it has little to do with lack of viewership or anything nefarious. The license for S1 is up June 24, and S2 Dec 31. We hold out hope someone will pick it up. The next generation of Trek fans deserves it.May 14, 2025
For those who may not be familiar with the Star Trek saga, Star Trek: Prodigy takes place after the events of Star Trek: Voyager, featuring a group of youths who board an abandoned USS Protostar located in the Tars Lamora prison colony. They join forces to traverse from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant, even receiving advice from the iconic Captain Janeway.
Historically, given the praise and audience reception it has garnered, there seems to be no justification for the misfortunes faced by the series. Having received nominations for three Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, winning two, it has clearly shown its potential for continuation, and efforts were even initiated when the show faced its initial cancellation on Paramount+.
Currently, promotions have begun to refer to season 2 as “The Final Season.” We
