We cherish it when a development team displays significant progress and refinement with each of its upcoming projects. Specifically with Bombservice, the crew has consistently demonstrated a genuine understanding of what makes Metroidvanias truly engaging, and with Momodora: Moonlit Farewell, they have crafted what might just be their best title yet.
As the latest installment in the series, Moonlit Farewell is a marked improvement over its already charming predecessor, Reverie Under the Moonlight, in terms of scope, art design, and gameplay. Right from the outset, you’re welcomed by stunning displays of pixel-art craftsmanship, with Bombservice showcasing its expertise in color and ambiance. This incredible artistry extends to the characters and adversaries, with each unique creature appearing both foreign in design and yet completely fitting within the enchanting realm of Momodora.
Gameplay will feel familiar if you’ve experienced the previous titles, as the main character Momo employs melee attacks along with a long-range bow to inflict damage. You acquire new, permanent abilities such as double-jump, sprinting, and wall jump throughout the gameplay, while sigils can be discovered or purchased for additional enhancements. Experimenting to discover which sigils best match your playstyle is encouraged: do you prefer boosting your Healing Bells, or would you have more success in enhancing the power of your arrows?
Exploring the environment and defeating regular foes often provides a fair challenge, but true difficulty arises when confronting boss characters. Like all great action games, achievement comes when you take a step back, learn your enemies’ attack patterns, and wait for the right moment to strike.
