The Skyrim Together group previously integrated multiplayer into the expansive RPG, and they are now shifting their focus to The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered for a “communal mod” inspired by Dark Souls.

The Ghosts of Tamriel mod allows you to “share insights in-game with fellow players through interactable messages and pay tribute to adventurers who unfortunately perished,” as described on NexusMods. “This is an online feature, requiring an internet connection to send messages.”

“Messages from other players appear as floating stones,” enabling you to direct fellow explorers towards a cleverly hidden cave or mischievously inform them of treasure just off the edge of a cliff, true to the Soulslike essence.

On Discord, the Skyrim Together team mentioned that the initiative was fueled “by our enthusiasm for multiplayer mods,” also highlighting the similarities between their “communal mod” and the messaging system “present in Souls games.”

The modding experts hint at future developments as well: “This should hopefully keep you entertained until our next reveal!” I would certainly love to see Oblivion Remastered Together materialize, but perhaps that’s easier said than done considering the re-release doesn’t officially endorse modding—although modders have noted that the remaster “is essentially just Oblivion underneath,” so we’ll see what unfolds.

In somewhat related news, Bethesda recently expressed additional admiration for the group of modders who have been reconstructing Oblivion within Skyrim for the past 12 years: “Even though I contributed to Oblivion Remastered, I’m still looking forward to Skyblivion.”

With The Elder Scrolls 6 still absent, Oblivion Remastered illustrates why remakes and remasters are crucial tactics in the game developer’s toolkit.
