“Gaming’s rivalry is not other gaming”
Last month, Microsoft Gaming’s CEO Phil Spencer reiterated Xbox’s commitment to Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 users moving forward, and now the tech titan’s Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella has joined the conversation.
In a recent talk with TBPN regarding this “evolving” business model, Nadella noted the company’s desire to be a “remarkable publisher” on every platform now that the Activision acquisition has concluded, making it the “largest publisher” in the industry.
He also likened this strategy to the one Windows adopted with Microsoft Office. Here’s his perspective:
“Now that we are the largest publisher following the Activision [acquisition], we aspire to be a remarkable publisher – akin to the strategy we implemented with Office. We want to extend our reach across every platform, ensuring that whether it’s consoles, PCs, mobile, cloud gaming, or TVs, we guarantee that gamers everywhere can enjoy our games.”
Even with this growth across more devices and platforms, Microsoft is still reportedly pursuing its own next-gen gaming initiatives, which are said to blur the distinctions between PC and Xbox. Nadella also seemingly reinforced these narratives in his latest interview, asserting that the greatest competition for Microsoft and gaming is no longer “other” gaming, but “short form video”.
“Gaming’s rivalry is not other gaming [platforms]; the competition lies in short form video. Hence, if we as an industry fail to keep innovating – whether it’s in our production methods, the content we create, how we approach distribution, or the economic model – the optimal route to innovation is to maintain healthy margins, as that is essential for funding.”
Nadella’s remarks follow Xbox’s significant announcement last week that it would be introducing Halo to PlayStation for the very first time. On the Nintendo side, the Bethesda titles Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition (now under Microsoft’s umbrella) are both scheduled for release on Switch 2 in 2026.
