In conjunction with the upcoming Marvel-DC event — the first joint venture in more than two decades — comics titan Frank Miller is stepping up to script and illustrate a bonus tale spotlighting what might be the dream-come-true matchup: Old Man Logan facing off against Miller’s weathered Caped Crusader.

Few creators loom larger over both Marvel and DC than Frank Miller, who ushered super-heroics into a grittier, grown-up arena during the ’80s via his collaboration with Chris Claremont on the inaugural Wolverine solo run and his standalone masterpiece The Dark Knight Returns.

Because this collaboration is being built more around distinctive creators than the character-centred slugfests that defined the 1990s Marvel Vs. DC line, it’s only natural that Miller re-enters sequential art doing what he does best: tackling the very heroes who made him famous and cemented his status as one of the medium’s most influential voices.

In addition to the story, Miller has designed an alternative cover for Deadpool/Batman #1 (Marvel’s half of the crossover; DC’s equivalent is Batman/Deadpool #1). The image showcases Miller’s 2025 interpretation of both his Dark Knight Batman and Marvel’s dystopian fan-favourite, Old Man Logan.

Miller’s current line work is decidedly more idiosyncratic than the fierce minimalism of his eighties prime. Much like Nicolas Cage, Miller mastered his art at a relatively young age and has since given himself free rein to stretch stylistic boundaries.

With little left to prove, this project feels like a triumphant lap for a storyteller whose catalogue has enthralled readers and motivated countless successors — a perfect curtain call that returns him to two of his most cherished legacies.

Deadpool/Batman #1 arrives September 17. While you wait, dive into the greatest Batman tales ever published, including The Dark Knight Returns, and explore the essential Wolverine sagas featuring Old Man Logan.

Since 2011, I’ve served as Newsarama’s Marvel authority and all-around comics archivist, while also acting as the on-the-ground reporter for SDCC, NYCC and C2E2. When I’m not immersed in comic culture coverage, I create oddball illustrations and shred heavy guitar riffs.
