Mario heads to the stars in first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but we wish we could unsee Sexy Bowser

The initial teaser for The Super Mario Galaxy Film has arrived and, as anticipated, it hints at a cosmic journey for the mustachioed plumber and his gathered allies from the Mushroom Kingdom.

On the more celestial side of things, a cascade of meteors traverses the Mushroom Kingdom, leading to an escapade amongst the stars. During this time, Mario and Luigi travel to Super Mario Odyssey’s Sand Kingdom, while newcomer Rosalina finds herself pursued by villain Bowser Jr. in his Super Mario Galaxy machine, Megaleg.

As for fresh castings, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson is joining the Marvel realm as ‘cosmic guardian’ Rosalina. Benny Safdie, on the other hand, lends his voice to Bowser Jr.

Previously, a duo of Super Mario Galaxy Film leaks disclosed what to expect from the otherworldly sequel. They revealed an Old Spice collaboration revealing Yoshi’s cinematic design ahead of schedule, along with a Pillsbury cookie pack hinting at the presence of both the Comet Observatory and series antagonist, Bowser Jr.

Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto has offered an update on The Super Mario Galaxy Film, informing fans that the sequel to the billion-dollar 2023 success has reached the “final phases” of production.

“We’re in the final phases of production now, but I think it’s going to be enjoyable,” Miyamoto hinted in an interview with the Japanese publication Casa Brutus (H/T VGC). “I generally say, ‘I’ll keep refining it until it becomes fun,’ so that itself should indicate how assured I am.”

Beyond Mario, Nintendo is also developing a live-action The Legend of Zelda film in collaboration with Sony, which has been slightly postponed until May 7, 2027.

The Super Mario Galaxy Film premieres in theaters on April 3, 2026.
