Liquid Swords Announces Layoffs While Committing to a Sustainable Work Model

Liquid Swords is reducing its workforce by an undisclosed number of employees to “adjust to the prevailing business environment.”

This Swedish studio was founded in 2020 by former Avalanche Studios CCO and founder Christofer Sundberg. Its first title is described as a “narrative-driven, open-world, hardboiled AAA revenge tale, created and developed using Unreal Engine 5.”

A statement released by the studio indicates that the project is still in development, but that layoffs are essential to ensure “long-term viability.”

“I promised our team and stakeholders that we would succeed and build a studio that redefines game development through a small, skilled workforce and a sustainable work approach,” Sundberg remarked.

“While we have accomplished much of this, changing market conditions have hindered our ability to meet our timeframe. Consequently, we must let go of talented individuals who have been pivotal to our journey. This is extremely challenging, but we remain dedicated to our vision and will continue to advance our intellectual property and first game with a committed team.”

An FAQ on the studio’s website reveals that Liquid Swords aimed to expand to 100 employees by early 2024, although it is uncertain if that goal was achieved.

These expansion plans were revealed following an undisclosed investment by NetEase in the studio to reinforce its vision of implementing a “quality-focused approach to game development.” This, it seems, remains the objective.

“Despite these unfortunate changes, Liquid Swords continues to focus on Sundberg’s vision of simplifying the game development process to deliver outstanding gaming experiences for players,” the statement adds.

“The studio is optimistic that this deeply regrettable setback will not hinder its pursuit of its original goals.”
