Although executing some quite intense stunts in action franchises such as The Matrix and John Wick, Keanu Reeves states that his most severe on-location injury actually occurred while filming his new comedy with Seth Rogen, where he portrays an angel.

When queried by Travis and Jason Kelce on the New Heights Podcast whether he indeed sustained more injuries during Good Fortune than in any previous action movie, Reeves affirmed. “I had a vertical fracture in my kneecap,” Reeves remarked, detailing how his patella was split into two. “The agony was utterly outrageous.”

So, what transpired? Was Reeves subduing an adversary like his Point Break persona Johnny Utah, or evading gunfire like The Matrix’s Neo? No, he… stumbled over a rug. “I was performing a scene and then heading back to the dressing room; they had a rug spread out,” the star detailed. “Then there was a small section, and my foot got caught. I began to fall and I slammed my left knee like bang! And just spiked it.”

Nevertheless, Reeves did not allow the injury to hinder his filming. “I was restricted,” the star continued, “I wore a brace for practically ten weeks, but I continued to shoot while I had that.”

The injury appears rather appropriate, as in Good Fortune, Reeves embodies a well-meaning yet somewhat clumsy angel named Gabriel who interferes in the lives of a struggling gig worker, Arj, played by Parks and Recreation’s Aziz Ansari, and a prosperous venture capitalist named Jeff (Rogen). However, when Gabriel opts to swap bodies with Arj and Jeff to demonstrate that wealth isn’t everything, he loses his wings and must witness his life’s efforts fall apart around him.

Good Fortune is penned and directed by Ansari and also features Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh.

Good Fortune is set to premiere in theaters on October 17. For additional details, take a look at our compilation of the finest underrated comedy films, and stay updated with forthcoming movies in 2025 and beyond.
