In a bid to reignite the JRPG community’s aspirations only to have them dashed once more, I feel compelled to share that Yuji Horii has indeed mentioned a Chrono Trigger remake, stating he is “considering” the initiative this time around.
Understandably, I share the excitement with all those anticipating a possible Chrono Trigger remake. It ranks among the top JRPGs ever conceived and frequently holds the number one position in rankings like the one I just referred to, and with good reason. So far, no official confirmations exist, but after an exceptionally disappointing series of updates last week, we now have genuine cause for optimism, and this time I’m confident nothing is getting lost in translation.
To recap, last week, I reported on misinterpreted statements from Horii that appeared to indicate that a Chrono Trigger remake had unintentionally been unveiled. However, over the weekend, a new video from the panel clarified that Horii never even referred to the remake, leading to tears alongside my deflated JRPG peers.
Now, during an interview with Gamereactor, Horii stated, through his translator, that he is contemplating remaking Chrono Trigger. Reflecting on the 30th anniversary, here’s the specific quote from the video interview:
“It has been quite some time. Yes, I wish to pursue something. Currently, Dragon Quest has seen remakes for 3, 1, and 2. I receive numerous requests for a Chrono Trigger remake as well, thus I am beginning to ponder it.”
Of course, this revelation is significantly less thrilling than Horii inadvertently affirming a Chrono Trigger remake, but following that disappointment over the weekend, I’m merely grateful to cling to more than pure hope. We are somewhat back in the game, folks.
