If there’s anything enthusiasts cherish more than engaging with video games, it’s debating about video games online. However, occasionally, a query arises with a reply so evident that it’s hard to even contest. Like yes, undoubtedly, Doom 2’s Super Shotgun is the GOAT FPS weapon. Even the legendary Doom creator John Romero isn’t inclined to fake humility about it.

The Twitter account of the revived Apogee Entertainment brand raised a simple question over the weekend: “What is the most gratifying weapon in gaming history?” Considering the brand posing the inquiry, you probably wouldn’t be overly astonished to discover that many of the responses mention classic FPS weapons, such as Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun, Doom’s BFG, or the Quake railgun.

Yet, one weapon boasting two barrels of devastation repeatedly surfaces, and Romero articulated it in the clearest terms possible: “Super Shotgun.” As our companions at PC Gamer highlight, the iconic Doom 2 weapon is likely the nearest thing to an objective answer this inquiry could possess. Iconic, potent, and around since the genesis of FPS history. You might have a personal preference, but how can you contest against the Super Shotgun?

There’s something a tad Obama Awards Obama a Medal about Romero designating a weapon from his own creation for this accolade, but, well, he’s correct. And he’s been quite persistent in stating it. He reacted to a similar prompt in 2023 to declare the Super Shotgun the “most emblematic weapon in gaming,” and took a moment to inform a fan with misguided weapon views that “the super shotgun is the GOAT.” There’s no contending with the legend on this, I fear.

These are the finest FPS games you can enjoy today.
