Last week’s job cuts at Microsoft and Xbox Games were astonishing to say the least, with more than 9,000 individuals losing their positions, including long-serving staff at Rare, Romero Games, along with the cancellation of major projects such as Perfect Dark. This occurs despite the fact that the tech behemoth reportedly earned $26 billion in the last quarter.

Moreover, in the aftermath, peers in the industry have been lamenting the “tremendous loss of talent” that has been released, with many condemning Microsoft for the choice. One prominent figure is the current Vice President of Technology at The Pokémon Company, Eric Neustadter (shared via PC Gamer), who previously served at Microsoft as an Operations Manager for Xbox Live.

“It’s disheartening to witness what’s occurring in this sector that I cherish,” Neustadter expressed on Bluesky. “The motivations are so misaligned that enjoyable games and profitable teams aren’t what truly count.”

Numerous individuals online resonate with Neustadter’s viewpoint, including former IGN writer (who later worked on Star Wars: Squadrons and Gotham Knights) Mitch Dyer. “Incredible that CEOs can terminate nearly 20,000 roles in a year yet retain their positions — a truly disgraceful exhibition of leadership at Microsoft.”

Tony Grayson, the creator of Antonblast and Antonball, commented “My heart aches for my colleagues at Microsoft impacted by today’s layoffs. Truly beyond description.” Meanwhile, former BioWare writer and narrative director on skate. John Elper remarked he was “still grappling with the MS announcement,” mentioning that the industry is “at its bleakest.”

“Increasing numbers indefinitely is not viable and never has been,” states Dosa Divas director and Outerloop Games co-founder Chandana Ekanayake, who criticizes the present status of the industry and the cycle of dismissing talent only to revert “to hiring and acquisition once more.”

As more news emerges regarding the layoffs and canceled games over the past few days, criticism is amplifying, especially concerning Microsoft’s rising investments in AI technology.

As current Senior Systems Designer at Respawn Andrew Carl states, the “devastation” coincides precisely with these developments. Carl is also a former Blizzard and Vicarious Visions employee.

This is an extraordinarily challenging period in the industry right now, and we are still uncovering further information about last week’s extensive job cuts at Microsoft.

Don’t forget to support the games and creators you appreciate, folks.
