The moment has finally arrived: the launch date for the crime thriller developed by Rob Two has been officially disclosed. Yes, Mafia: The Outmoded Country – which previously only had a vague ‘Summer 2025’ release window – will hit the shelves on August 8, 2025. This announcement comes directly from 2K, marking a significant slip-up in their communication.

Mafia: The Outmoded Country was unveiled at Gamescom 2024. Instead of continuing the storyline from Mafia 3 set in the 1960s, or even revisiting the plots of the earlier two titles, the game serves as a prequel. It will explore the roots of the Mafia and transport the franchise away from the United States, returning to its origins in The Outmoded Country, specifically, Sicily. We received another trailer at The Game Awards 2024 (actually, 12 hours prior, due to an unintentional leak) offering a glimpse into the game’s narrative and cutscenes, but no gameplay was showcased.

Even in the absence of gameplay visuals and a new trailer, we can now confirm that Mafia: The Outmoded Country is set to launch on August 8, 2025. 2K announced this information on the game’s Latam Steam page, alongside details about the forthcoming Mafia: The Outmoded Country Developer Panel at PAX East 2025.

Nevertheless, the conclusion of the post contained an unexpected note spotted by a Twitter user (via Insider Gaming) which read, “Mafia: The Old Country will be available on August 8, 2025. Pre-order now for PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, and stay informed through the official Mafia website for further updates.” This message has since been removed from the page, likely intended for the upcoming panel, but 2K was too late to retract it, as the Mafia community discovered and shared it rapidly.

With Mafia: The Outmoded Country launching in August and Borderlands 4 coming in September, 2K seems set for a busy end to 2025. The debut of yet another crime-themed title from Rob Two in August likely indicates that GTA 6 may not arrive that month either. Unless Rob Two is willing to pit Mafia or Borderlands against the gigantic release that is GTA, it seems we’re looking at an October 2025 release for GTA 6 at the earliest.
