The “visionary art director” was just 52 at the time of his demise.

Half-Life 2 art director Viktor Antonov has passed away at the age of 52.

The news was confirmed on Sunday by former Valve lead writer Marc Laidlaw, who expressed his feelings in a now-removed social media post.

“I didn’t want to say much until I felt it was validated, but I discovered today that Viktor Antonov, our visionary art lead on Half-Life 2, has passed away,” Laidlaw stated. “I lack details, only sorrow. He was brilliant and unique. He enhanced everything.”

Heartfelt colleagues expressed their sympathies, including Arkane and WolfEye Studios founder Raphaël Colantonio on BlueSky.

“I regret not telling you how much respect I had for you; we get engrossed in our lives until an unexpected event like this strikes,” Colantonio wrote.

“You were crucial to Arkane Studios’ achievements and an inspiration to many of us, and also a friend with whom I hold many cherished memories.”

Antonov embarked on his career in gaming as a concept artist for Redneck Rampage in 1997. He became part of Valve in 2004, where he brought his creative vision to life for Half-Life 2.
