Relax, everyone, all is well with the universe once again: Sales of the notoriously bulky, pricey PS5 have now matched those of the notoriously bulky, pricey PS3 in the area, and Sony‘s newest device arrived significantly quicker as well.
“Fun fact about September 2025 US video game statistics – The PlayStation 5 has now exceeded the PlayStation 3 in total installed units,” Mat Piscatella from the US research organization Circana stated in a Bluesky post. “So that’s pretty neat.”
Regardless, the PS5’s achievement is still remarkable, considering we’re not even five years post-launch of the console – the PS3 spent a full decade on the market to develop its user base, and had a much stronger lineup of exclusive titles to boot. The PS5 certainly has an excellent library, but Sony’s first-party releases have diminished considerably in the current era; we simply aren’t receiving the MotorStorms, the LittleBigPlanets, or even the Folklores that we used to.
