The awkwardly christened Square Enix tactics-RPG from more than three years ago has unexpectedly dropped onto PS5 and Xbox Series X|S today. It’s discounted 30 % for a short spell, and I’m popping in to champion it.
The publisher flashed the announcement earlier this morning. Crafted by the same teams behind Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy first saw light on Switch before jumping to PC in late 2022. A curious VR spin landed in 2024, and now the next-gen console reissues boast “4K support and boosted frame rate for slicker combat” while noting “select consoles only”—a line I’m reading as a gentle warning for the leaner Xbox Series S.

For the moment, the discount lasts until September 4 and shaves the price to $42. PlayStation hunters must tote an active PS Plus subscription to pocket that deal; the Xbox listing doesn’t list such a gate.
You probably remember the debut of Project Triangle Strategy during a bygone Nintendo Direct. That was ages prior to the imminent Final Fantasy Tactics remaster finally surfacing, so witnessing a fresh strategy RPG from Square sporting the irresistible HD-2D look felt electric. We collectively held our breath for the final title, only for it to tangle with every gnarly branch and land squarely on the least inspired possibility: Triangle Strategy.
Luckily, the final product was anything but bland. It isn’t quite Unicorn Overlord, yet our Triangle Strategy review applauds its inventive skirmishes, and broader critics have been pretty generous on Metacritic. At $42, it’s absolutely worth the plunge.
