Are you prepared to challenge the Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A? While ordinary Pokemon already possess attacks that render them useful in combat, these enhanced versions provide augmented abilities that reveal their genuine potential. However, there are numerous methods to unlock these upgrades. We will cover all the specifics in this guide, but be warned that there are significant spoilers ahead.

All Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Mega Evolutions become accessible several hours into the storyline. Specifically, this happens during Main Mission 9: Pursue that Mysterious Pokemon. From that moment forward, you’ll need to get accustomed to additional mechanics:

  • You can purchase or acquire Mega Evolution stones through various channels. These can be equipped by specific Pokemon to activate their Mega Evolution form.
  • Z-A Royale trainers starting from Rank E will unleash Mega Evolved creatures as the final Pokemon in their team.
  • These rival trainers also reward you with Technical Machines/TMs upon winning the battle.
  • The gameplay loop has a slight alteration, since you’ll need to confront Rogue Mega Evolutions in groups. Most segments feature three boss encounters that must be completed. After defeating the rogue boss, you’ll receive that species’ Mega Evolution stone as well.

How to activate Mega Evolutions

How to activate Mega Evolutions

Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A are accessible only to a limited number of creatures. Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect from this feature:

  • As a general guideline, a Pokemon must achieve the final stage of its evolutionary line (in most scenarios exclusive of storyline anomalies).
  • You also need to possess the Mega Evolution stone related to that species.
  • Here’s an illustration:
    • If you possess a Tynamo, it must reach level 39 to evolve into an Eelektrik. Subsequently, you need to utilize a Thunder Stone to transform it into an Eelektross.
    • With an Eelektross in your active roster, you need to procure an Eelektrossite.
    • Have the Eelektross equip this item through the Satchel menu.
  • In battles, strike your adversaries with any Pokemon. Alternatively, when confronting Rogue Mega Evolutions, collect the luminous orbs they drop. These fill up the transformation meter.
  • Once the meter is full, switch to a Pokemon that carries a stone equipped. Then, press the right thumbstick to initiate the Mega Evolution.
  • Mega Evolutions are only temporary, however, you can prolong the duration by collecting the previously mentioned glowing orbs.
  • Mega Evolved Pokemon possess “+” (plus) moves, which are more powerful versions of their abilities.

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 1 - Absol

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 1 – Absol

In this segment of our Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolutions guide, we cover all the rogue bosses you encounter during the storyline. As mentioned previously, these creatures yield the keystone required for that specific species.

The initial adversary, the Mega Absol, appears at the conclusion of Mission 9: Pursue that Mysterious Pokemon. This opponent shouldn’t present an excessive challenge since you have a Mega Lucario assisting you. Unfortunately, the Lucario does not remain in your team indefinitely, yet you will still obtain the keystone for any Absol that you capture later.

Note 1: When a Mega Evolution boss is about to utilize their ultimate move, it is advisable to retreat your Pokemon to prevent any area-of-effect damage.

Note 2: Your character can only endure a limited number of hits before fainting–i.e. indicated by the dimming and reddish hue at the edges of your screen. If you are defeated in battle, there is an option to resume from where you left off. The boss’ health will remain unchanged from before your character’s defeat, though the health of your Pokemon.

team will be entirely revived.

Starter Pokemon Mega Evolution keystone

Starter Pokemon Mega Evolution keystone

You obtain the keystone for your starter Pokemon during the appropriately titled Mission 10: The Secrets of Mega Evolution. After defeating the Mega Absol previously, you’ll need to conquer Vinnie to achieve Rank F in the Z-A Royale.

Az will subsequently give you the keystone, which is contingent upon the companion that you selected at the outset of the adventure. In our playthrough, we chose Totodile, thus we secured the Feraligite item at this juncture of the campaign.

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 2 - Slowbro, Camerupt, and Victreebell

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 2 – Slowbro, Camerupt, and Victreebell

The following portions of the quest involve battling three Rogue Mega Evolutions in various locations throughout the city. Your companions–i.e. Urbain, Lida, and Naveen–provide aid as they also deploy their own Pokemon. However, be aware that the bosses frequently target your character relentlessly, so attempt to endure if you can.

  • Mega Slowbro – Generates six water whirlpools that spread outward.
  • Mega Camerupt – Causes massive rocks to tumble around the battleground.
  • Mega Victreebell – Releases multiple poisonous orbs that linger on the terrain for several seconds.

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 3 - Beedrill, Hawlucha, and Banette

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 3 – Beedrill, Hawlucha, and Banette

  • Mega Beedrill – Shoots several stinger missiles that home in on targets.
  • Mega Hawlucha – Soars high into the sky before dive-bombing a large region.
  • Mega Banette – The clash against Banette could be the most exasperating at this point in the game. Your opponent creates multiple replicas of themselves, and you must strike the right target. Eliminating a clone results in an explosion. The others, in the meantime, swiftly rush at your character.

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 4 - Mawile, Barbaracle, and Ampharos

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 4 – Mawile, Barbaracle, and Ampharos

  • Mega Mawile – Produces several orbs that slowly descend toward the ground before detonating.
  • Mega Barbaracle – Executes a charge-up maneuver before rapidly charging at your character to inflict substantial damage.
  • Mega Ampharos – Summons several bolts of lightning that strike the battlefield, creating lasting electric fields.

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 5 - Froslass, Altaria, and Venusaur

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 5 – Froslass, Altaria, and Venusaur

  • Mega Froslass – This Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolution confrontation has a fairly distinct mechanism. Essentially, the Froslass causes large ice pillars to fall, inflicting significant damage upon impact. Moments later, the boss conjures a swirling snowstorm that engulfs the entire area. You must seek refuge behind the pillars to avoid damage. Be sure to dismiss your Pokemon as well, since they’re unlikely to find cover right next to you.
  • Mega Altaria – Generates several swirls of tornadoes that drift slowly across the area. Given that Mega Altaria is a Dragon/Fairy type, your best strategy is to utilize Poison-type Pokemon.
  • Mega Venusaur – Causes thorny vines to surge from the earth. Your adversary also possesses a beam that tracks your position even while you’re in motion.

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 6 - Dragonite, Tyranitar, and Starmie

Rogue Mega Evolution bosses: Part 6 – Dragonite, Tyranitar, and Starmie

  • Mega Dragonite – Dragonite summons whirlwinds and lightning strikes. When the boss charges up for their ultimate move, they’ll soar off into the distance before unleashing Hyper Beam. This is then followed by an arena-wide explosion, which your character can withstand. Therefore, dismissing your Pokemon is crucial so they can evade harm from the detonation.
  • Mega Tyranitar – Creates spiked earth eruptions that follow a three-pronged arc. Quicksand areas also emerge, causing damage and impeding movement.
  • Mega Starmie – The Mega Starmie encounter is relatively straightforward. Generally, you just need to remain agile while your opponent charges up the Bubble Beam.

Rogue Mega Evolution gauntlet - Campaign finale

Rogue Mega Evolution gauntlet – Campaign finale

Approaching the conclusion of the adventure, you must confront an array of Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Here are some noteworthy points:

  • Unlike the earlier boss encounters where you face a single ferocious adversary, these confrontations involve two or more rogue creatures.
  • Allies remain on hand to support you. Nevertheless, your enemies still enjoy targeting your character. Exercise caution as you might overlook the damage you’re incurring due to the chaos surrounding you. Also, if you faint during battle, you’ll need to restart the engagement, which can be somewhat inconvenient.
  • Area-of-effect (AoE) moves and those with rapid casting animations are highly effective here. With numerous enemies clustered together, you can hit multiple targets with a single attack. Of course, if your Pokemon sustain multiple hits before being able to act, they could easily become incapacitated as well.
  • Defensive moves such as Light Screen and Safeguard are extremely beneficial for these confrontations. Their lasting effects persist even if you change out your Pokemon.

In any event, here are the Mega Evolved Pokemon you encounter as part of this gauntlet:

  • Encounter #1: Mega Gengar and Mega Heracross.
  • Encounter #2: Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Garchomp, and Mega Pidgeot.
  • Encounter #3: Mega Blastoise and Mega Steelix.
  • Encounter #4: Mega Aggron and Mega Salamence.
  • Encounter #5: Mega Gardevoir and Mega Gallade.
  • Encounter #6: Mega Alakazam, Mega Aerodactyl, and Mega Metagross.

Note: None of these encounters actually provide a keystone for a species. This is because the items themselves can be found at the aforementioned establishments–i.e. Quasartico Inc. and the Stone Emporium.

The final boss and the Zygardite keystone

The final boss and the Zygardite keystone

We don’t want to spoil all the specifics here, but it would be remiss of us not to mention the final altercation in the campaign itself. Here’s a brief overview:

  • Your objective is to strike the two “flower tentacles” using various abilities. Accomplish this while dodging projectiles, lasers, and damage zones.
  • There are also occasions when you need to take cover beneath Zygarde while they have a protective shield active. This mitigates the damage from an onslaught. You can dismiss your Pokemon during such times as they may wander outside Zygarde’s shield.
  • Each time you eliminate the two flower tentacles, you get to control Zygarde for a brief moment. You can utilize any of the three moves: Thousand Arrows, Thousand Waves, and Land’s Wrath. At the very end of the fight, you can also unleash Core Enforcer.
  • Upon completing this phase, you receive the Zygardite keystone. Additionally, you’ll be able to use Nihil Light to vanquish your antagonist.
