Due to the fast-paced internet and various cultural changes, in-person LAN gatherings have largely become a relic of the past, except during special occasions. However, a new LAN Party application is set to debut on Steam, merging a digital experience with licensed streaming technology.
LAN Party Technologies, Inc. has announced that its LAN Party application will soon be available on Steam Early Access. The app features the ability to design custom avatars and gaming environments within a 3D virtual setting. In many respects, it bears a resemblance to The Sims or the metaverse that Facebook—apologies, Meta—has been trying to develop for years. One of the gaming room options showcased on LAN Party’s Steam page includes Mortal Kombat arcade cabinets, similar to those made by Arcade1Up. However, it remains uncertain whether these are playable games or merely ornamental.
It appears that LAN Party is not intended to replace traditional gaming streams. Instead, it allows users to integrate streams from external sources within the virtual environment where they display on their avatars’ screens. Gamers aren’t restricted to a single game, enabling them to select their own titles to enjoy while sharing the experience via the app.
