By the close of this week, enthusiasts of classic turn-based RPGs, delightful characters, and a good sprinkle of nostalgic ’90s humor will be in celebration mode, as the Lunar Remastered Collection debuts on Switch and various other platforms.

Lunar stands out as a series that, if you’re familiar with JRPGs, you’ve likely encountered even if you haven’t engaged with them. It began on the Sega CD, followed by enhancements for Sega Saturn and PS1, with both Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar: Eternal Blue cherished and esteemed by those who experienced them in their youth.

A significant factor contributing to their extensive fame is attributed to some remarkable Collector’s Editions that launched with the PS1 variations of the games. Working Designs, the company tasked with localizing the Sega CD and PS1 versions, earned accolades for assembling intricate special editions for PlayStation titles. Entire communities have formed around acquiring these rare collections.

The two Lunar titles delivered the most celebrated items. Silver Star Story Complete included a hardcover guide, a fabric map, and a figure of the antagonist Ghaleon, while Eternal Blue Complete featured similar items plus a replica necklace and character standees among other treasures. At that time, they were considered premium editions, and they continue to outshine most special editions into 2025.

GungHo — the publisher of this fresh remaster — generously provided us with a striking press kit that reflects the high quality and diversity of those ’90s collections. It truly rekindled fond memories of our younger days, much like the games do.

This kit includes a t-shirt, a medium gaming mousepad, an exquisite cloth poster showcasing new artwork by series artist Toshiyuki Kubooka, a lenticular card, a selection of bromide cards — replicas of in-game character cards reminiscent of a type of Japanese portrait photography featuring renowned singers, actors, geishas, athletes, etc. — and, our favorite part, a stunning acrylic diorama depicting scenes from both games.

It’s a substantial offering — why not delve into it a bit?

We wish these items were available for fans, as dedicated supporters of Lunar would cherish the chance to incorporate this into their collection. You can join a contest hosted by GungHo to win a set (along with a digital game copy), so it’s definitely worth a shot!

For now, we know many of you are eagerly anticipating this Friday when Lunar Remastered Collection becomes available on Switch. We believe this version of the games does a commendable job, awarding it a 7/10 score and stating “if you enjoy RPGs, they’re likely to bring a smile to your face.”
