Final Fantasy sequence has now sold over 200m copies worldwide
The Final Fantasy franchise has now achieved over 200 million units sold worldwide.
Square Enix made the revelation on its social media platforms, alongside data indicating that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series has reached sales of over 5 million copies globally.
This sales statistic further establishes Final Fantasy as one of the highest-selling gaming franchises in history, even though recent years have seen a slight decline in sales.
Final Fantasy stands alongside franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and The Sims, having surpassed sales of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and The Legend of Zelda franchise. However, it still lags significantly behind the Mario franchise, Tetris, Call of Duty, Pokémon, GTA, Minecraft, and FIFA.
In terms of sales performance, the PS1 generation was notably the most prosperous for Final Fantasy. The title Final Fantasy 7 sold nearly 15 million copies, Final Fantasy 8 achieved 12 million copies sold, and Final Fantasy 9 registered sales of 8.9 million. Additionally, Final Fantasy 12 sales reached 11.3 million, Final Fantasy 15 sold 10.3 million, Final Fantasy 13 achieved 9.6 million, and Final Fantasy 10 sold close to 9 million (thanks to Video Game Sales Wiki).
Nonetheless, all these figures pale in comparison to Final Fantasy 14, which recorded 24 million sales. In 2021, the MMORPG was the most successful title in the franchise, and its financial performance has consistently kept the company afloat when other titles failed to meet expectations.

More recently, while Final Fantasy 7 Remake sold 8.7 million copies, both the follow-up Rebirth and the next installment, Final Fantasy 16, “did not meet expectations” according to Square Enix.
Still, the 5 million sales for the Pixel Remasters – updated versions of the original six games in the series – is encouraging news for the company, showcasing both the nostalgia and interest from longtime fans as well as newcomers to the franchise.
With Square Enix’s multiplatform strategy, sales are expected to continue to grow. Most recently, Rebirth
