Final Fantasy 14 Director Has Had “Positive Discussions” With Nintendo On Switch 2 Port
“My earnest hope is that the community can anticipate some uplifting announcements down the road.”
The monumentally-successful MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV — on the verge of ringing in its 12th anniversary (after the relaunch) — consistently tops the list of Switch 2 wish-lists in our inbox, at least from this keyboard. It now appears the dream just inched nearer to reality.
Game director Naoki Yoshida — affectionately dubbed Yoshi-P — informed VGC at Gamescom that the studio has enjoyed “constructive conversations” with Nintendo regarding a prospective version. Additionally, he’d love to deliver his other numbered entry, Final Fantasy XVI, to the system too.
He remarked to VGC, “Personally, my goal is to make Final Fantasy XIV and XVI available to the widest audience possible… We’re devoting every resource to realize that, so please tell your readers I remain extremely optimistic.”
The seasoned producer concedes that the handheld factor and the lower horsepower versus PS5 rigs could complicate top-tier raids, “Yet most of the lighter activities — think harvesting logs in the Living Memory or perfecting a Culinarian rotation — are ideal for kicking back on the couch with a Switch 2.”
Inside Final Fantasy XIV, you’ll find combat jobs beside entire professions that let you forge armor, concoct potions, prepare gourmet dishes, and mine materials. These pursuits skew far more relaxed than savage raids or duty-finder roulettes — and nowadays story trials and dungeons can largely be conquered with trusty NPC companions.
Beyond accommodating laid-back sessions, the team is keen on welcoming a fresh, perhaps younger, generation of Nintendo players.
“We’re in ongoing contact with Nintendo [5,512 articles]”>Nintendo; the dialogue has been encouraging,” Yoshi-P summarized. “I strongly encourage the playerbase to keep an eye out for hopefully pleasant developments.” We’re crossing our fingers as well!
Yoshi-P has long voiced enthusiasm for bringing FFXIV to a Nintendo device, and he’s openly fond of the company’s catalog. Earlier this year he hailed Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom as essential playing for budding designers.
