As enthusiasts on both sides of the gaming industry eagerly await some of this year’s potential major titles such as Grand Theft Auto 6 and the Nintendo Switch 2, veteran analyst and Circana games executive Mat Piscatella predicts that the launches of these two in 2025 could trigger remarkable sales growth in gaming.
In a recent conversation with the Limit Break Network, Piscatella shared insights on why Rockstar Games‘ highly anticipated game and Nintendo‘s upcoming handheld system launching in the same year can be impactful for the gaming sector. “If these two events occur this year,” the analyst comments, “and they meet expectations, I believe we could see growth in overall market spending on video game products in the low to mid-single-digit percentage range.”
This may seem modest to those of us less familiar with the financial dynamics of video games, but it would indeed represent a significant leap for the industry. “Now, that may not sound substantial, but it would translate to record spending from consumers, restoring growth to the industry since the 2021 peak we previously witnessed,” Piscatella continues, “and, most crucially, it would reinvigorate investment flowing back into the gaming sector.”

This growth would be particularly significant as the market has merely “remained relatively stable” since the peak in 2021, according to Piscatella. “We had a market that had been expanding for decades suddenly peak and stop growing after 2021 – and while the market has stayed relatively stable at those heights, it hasn’t surpassed them.” He emphasizes that it’s not just consumers who would benefit from the potential market expansion, but also investors and developers.
“These factors could significantly assist in getting the market back on a growth path, and [there’s] nothing investors appreciate more than an upward trend,” he notes. “If your trajectory isn’t headed up and to the right, it becomes extremely difficult to attract investment – because once that investment begins to flow in, you’ll start seeing more games released and additional teams getting supported, which leads to a self-perpetuating cycle of growth – which is what I’m advocating for.”
Looking forward to the future.”
It appears that the release of GTA 6 and the Switch 2 may significantly influence the gaming industry should they both debut in 2025. While the future remains uncertain, analysts in Japan have suggested a
for the Switch 2, and a trailer
for GTA 6 was revealed at the end of 2023, alongside an
confirmation of a fall release window
becoming apparent shortly thereafter.
