Dying Light creator Techland has verified – or at least not refuted – claims that it has internally cancelled games, although it remains uncertain whether its unnamed fantasy RPG is included in that list.
I contacted the studio yesterday seeking specifics and confirmation after the Polish business publication Pulz Biznesu stated that Techland had shelved two projects. The studio’s reply is somewhat unclear but does not contradict the report. I specifically inquired about the two reported cancellations and the status of the fantasy RPG unveiled in 2022, but Techland did not directly address that last inquiry.
In a recent statement to GamesRadar+, the studio’s PR acknowledges that its production strategies have evolved but emphasizes that no one has been dismissed as a consequence of those adjustments, seemingly preempting concerns and clarifying things early, especially with layoffs circulating due to Microsoft.
Techland’s complete statement reads:
“Game development is rarely a straightforward path, and occasionally new methods are needed to create exceptional games. What is crucial here is that none of the reported adjustments have led to staff layoffs. Developers were reassigned to other projects and are actively contributing to multiple games in our pipeline.
“Our main priority at this moment is to launch Dying Light: The Beast for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Following the release of Dying Light: The Beast, we will provide more information regarding future titles in due time.”
I’ve followed up requesting – though I’m not overly optimistic – for further information on that fantasy RPG and the extent of the production amendments, but Techland appears to be keeping its cards close to the vest for the time being.
