Director Yeon Sang-ho, known for Educate to Busan, is guiding us on yet another journey through the realm of the undead with his upcoming zombie film, Gunche.

In a recent announcement it was revealed that Gunche (which translates to “colony” in Korean) will feature stars such as Jun Ji-hyun, Run Soo, Ji Chang-wook, and Koo Kyo-hwan, all confirmed as part of the cast. However, details about the film’s plot are being kept confidential but have been teased as “the culmination of Yeon Sang-ho’s universe, connecting Educate to Busan and Peninsula.”

Yeon’s rapid, intense horror captivated audiences in 2016 when travelers aboard the titular train battled monsters with a taste for human brains. After grossing an impressive $98 million against an $8 million budget, it also transformed Ma Dong-seok into an international sensation, proving that using taped magazines as makeshift boxing gloves could effectively fend off the twisted, chattering undead. The film even made its way into an English-language remake, with James Wan attached as producer. However, as of 2022, the project has yet to make progress.

Yeon followed up Educate to Busan with Peninsula, which illustrated the widespread infection leading to global chaos. While it didn’t garner as much critical acclaim as its predecessor, it did introduce viewers to a grotesque zombie rat king, so there’s that to appreciate. He has also lined up his debut English-language film, titled thirty fifth Avenue, which is rumored to be an action horror, but details about it have also become scarce.
