DC’s Lanterns director clears up those True Detective comparisons

While we anticipate David Corenswet to captivate audiences as a swift bullet in Superman this year, there seems to be another endeavor in DC’s lineup that is starting to gain attention. Lanterns will spotlight terrestrial law enforcement officers, the Green Lantern Corps, featuring two of its most iconic members, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). The new series will concentrate on their initial encounter, with Jordan already being a seasoned ring bearer while Stewart is his fresh, eager recruit.

Originally pitched as DC’s take on True Detective, Lanterns involves two mismatched heroes enforcing intergalactic laws while pursuing a case that brings them back to Earth. “In terms of tone, it feels grounded. You have two characters, but it also carries humor and comedy that you wouldn’t typically find in True Detective,” director James Hawes explained to The Hollywood Reporter about his upcoming major project alongside showrunner Chris Mundy.

“It essentially follows a buddy cop format with a time-travel twist that introduces complexity to the storyline. Chris Mundy has done an outstanding job with the team, and I believe the comparison to True Detective holds merit,” he added.

At this moment, we aren’t far from witnessing the series, and significant progress is being made. The latest update revealed that Nathan Fillion would be reprising his role from Superman as Guy Gardner, a headstrong yet cherished member of the GLC who will make an appearance in the show eventually. However, with that unique hairstyle gracing a scene with the two lead characters, will the Lanterns we receive align with the original concept?
